Supreme Court Rules: Teachers Must Pass TET to Continue Service or Get Promotion
The Supreme Court of India has ruled that all teachers must clear the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) to remain in service or to be eligible for promotions. This rule applies even to teachers who were appointed before the TET requirement came into effect in 2011.
Background
The TET was made mandatory by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) on 29th July 2011 for teachers in classes 1 to 8. The Supreme Court examined several appeals, including Anjuman Ishat-E-Talim Trust vs State of Maharashtra and Others, to decide if teachers appointed before this notification must also pass TET to continue their job or get promotion.
Guidelines for Teachers Already in Service
- Teachers with less than 5 years left until retirement: They can continue their job without passing TET but will not be eligible for promotion unless they clear the exam.
- Teachers with more than 5 years left until retirement: They must pass TET within 2 years. Failure may lead to compulsory retirement or termination, though retirement benefits will be provided.
Importance of Teacher Standards
Maintaining high standards for teachers is essential for delivering quality education. Ensuring that teachers pass TET improves teaching skills, classroom management, and the overall learning experience for students. Qualified teachers play a critical role in shaping the future of children and enhancing the standard of education in schools.
Upcoming TET Opportunity
If you want to apply for TET, the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) December 2025 session will be released by the CBSE very soon. Eligible candidates can apply once the notification is officially released.
Supreme Emphasis on Quality Education
The Supreme Court ruling emphasizes the importance of teacher qualifications. By mandating TET for all serving teachers, it ensures that schools have competent educators, ultimately improving the quality of education across the country.
